A balance to a fast pace life

When we first recieved this assignment. We were put into groups of two and asked to design a main layout. Each apartment had to be a total of 900 sq feet. Our main plan had 30 units and a coffee shop. After designing the main layout we each designed one unit. I wanted to design a space that was very clean and bright, to allow the room to open up since it was in a tight space, and also be sustainable. The XY generation is centered around sustainablity, so i wanted to incorporate that into my design. The apartment I designed had bamboo floors and bamboo cabinets. The white paint on the walls is also an eco-organic paint.

Relajacion Aquatica

When we were fist given the assignment to design a place to bathe for disabled individuals, we began by looking at different cultures and their bathing rituals. I was extremely fascinated with the Japanese Bathing style. First, they begin their bathing process by washing their feet, then they wash their body which is suppose to clean away all the bad moods and negativity they experienced during their day. After the bath the Japanese soak in a tub for long periods of time. It can be anywhere for 30 minutes to an hour. The parents usually bathe in the tub with their young children, because to them its' a way of spending quality time. After my research I began to think about what type of space I would want if I was disabled. I knew that the Japanese culture is centered around nature, so I wanted to incorporate nature into my design. I began to think of ways of how to incorporate nature into my design, I focused mainly on water. My pool in the bathing space is influenced by a tad pol, it was really interesting to me how they change and become something different over time. The pool itself is 4 feet deep and has jets that will massage the individuals lower back and legs, if they wish to exercise while in the pool the jets also allow the person to float easier and move their legs in the water. The back two walls have a water fall on them which will also help relax the individual. In the shower space, the shower head also creates a water fall illusion.

Linear Conjuction

When we were first assigned this project, I had many different ideas for this dinning space. From the very beginning I envisioned an open space with light coming through the windows. We were asked to start the project by designing our own table for our space. As I began to think about the table, I thought about the dinning experience its self . I envision my dinning room to be very informal with a high table and stool seating. My table is 3'3" high and its 5' in width and 10' in length. With the space I wanted it to really express my concept of linear conjunction. I felt that the bottom of my table forms a grid pattern that brings the 4 legs of the table together to form a whole, just like when we dine we all come together to share this special moment.

Symbol group 6's experience with the various requirements to support human activities and needs at first was confusion and frustration because of misunderstanding the intentions of the exercise at first. Even after clarification, there was still a level of frustration because of the limits which caused several aspects of our designs to change. We also found that making a diagram was no longer quite as simple as it used to be. Suddenly we had to look up dimensions and numbers to apply to our diagram. We would recommend to other designers that they attempt to consider the needs of their clients and coding early on in the design process so that later on the changes won't be so drastic when they try and accommodate their design to fit the standards. This will save them a lot of problems later on. Codes help design by creating generalization and making people familiar with the objects the codes are applied to even if they haven’t seen these objects in that particular context before.The client will recognize a door frame for example because that is the size of a door frame in every other building they have entered. We anticipate that codes will change our work by making the design process more structured. This will both add to the ease and difficulty. With codes in place, suddenly we know the dimensions for our design, but it also limits to some extent what we can do. Keeping actual standards in mind means that we can no longer pick arbitrary numbers for a hallway.

Each of the two buses were designed to fit a particular need for hurricane prevention. Once bus is designed for counceling and the secound was designed for damage prevention. The damaged prevention bus will include materials such as wood, nails , tools, batteries, and flash lights, along with many other items. This project was one of the most dificult assigned thus far since we had to work with boundaries such as dimensions and limits.

tornado's

After designing our bus shelter, We were asked to think of a natural disasters and come up with a shelter that would protect from the natural disaster. We reasearched different natural disadters, as we looked through Youtube there was a video that really influences us to design for tornado's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SnTlC_PpPY. We did researched and realized that dome structures are the most dependable against tornado's because the wind curves to the sides and not over the structure. This research really influenced our design, The reason why the actual structure is underground is for more protection.

Bus shelter

In our studio class, we have been give the task to design a bus shelter that would be located on the corner of Tate street and Spring Garden, right out side of the Weatherspoon art museum. My group members (Megan,Chelsea,and Sara) and I decided to make a shelter that would protect against the rain, and would allow one to see the bus coming. Our design also gives a great amount of sitting space.

The 3 R's

We never know what other people have experienced until we put ourselves in each other’s shoes. When this assignment was given to us, I began to read the instructions and the missions we had to complete in order to successfully accomplish the assignment. The first thing I did from the three R’s was riding.
A group of students and I took the Greensboro public bus around town. When I first thought about riding the bus, I thought it would be like riding the Spartan Chariot, little did I know the public bus was completely different. As I got on the bus I felt as if everyone on there was judging me. I felt like the people on their looked at me as if I didn’t belong on the bus, People looked at us as if we were rich girls in a sense, I felt that was because most of the people on the bus looked as if they were of lower class. I got the impression that people thought our group were tourist because we were trying to document as much as we could by taking pictures.
When I got back home from the bus ride, I began the reading on Civility and Civil Rights. I believe that being on the bust first really made me understand the reason why I felt the way I did. I think that even though we are more accepting toward other races, people are always going to judge you on simple things such as the clothing you are wearing on the hand bag you are carrying. I believe that from those observations others make simple judgments that may not be true.
As I was doing the reading, some key moments that stood out the most to me where when it talked about, how parents would want to move their children to a different school because it was closer, but they would be denied that right. It also surprised me when a student with excellent grades was denied the transfer request, and the response that was given was what surprised me over all, they stated that if she was moved she may lose concentration on her grades would begin to fall. On the bus ride some key moments that stood out the most was when I first entered the bus. I remember clearly walking down the aisle trying to get to a seat. Everyone was looking at me up and down judging me. I also remember the way people were staring at us as a group when we were trying to take pictures of building and other things.
From this experience I have learned that we have progressed so much from the time of slavery to now. I think that we have moved forward but there is still more progress ahead of us. As a minority I feel like I can relate more closely to what happen during slavery because in a sense being Hispanic in this country is really hard you’re looked at very differently, especially if you can’t communicate as easily because of the language barrier.
